About

Fronted by the inimitable voices of Becky Unthank and Adam Holmes this world class band conjures a haunting sonic landscape around exquisite original songs, all set within a captivatingly beautiful animated world.

Award-winning composer and Lau’s visionary accordionist Martin Green has brought together Portishead’s Adrian Utley, Mogwai’s Dominic Aitchison and Becky Unthank from The Unthanks, with BAFTA-winning animators whiterobot (Will Anderson and Ainslie Henderson) for this extraordinary multimedia show.

Motivated by the varied impulses and desires behind human movement around the globe, Green gathered first-hand accounts – some heart-warming and life-affirming, others tragic and heartbreaking – which inspired lyrics by Karine Polwart, Anaïs Mitchell, Sandy Wright and Aidan Moffat (Arab Strap) and whiterobot’s extraordinary stop-motion animation.

Drawing these elements into a sound world which sets delicate vocals against a backdrop of enveloping electronics and guitars, Flit captures the breadth of people’s experience of this age-old phenomenon.

FLIT TOUR REVIEWS

The Guardian (Barbican, London) ****

“…a show laced with passion, emotion, drama and curiosity”

“the ingredient that really lifts it to another sphere are the animated figures of birds and wizened characters created out of brown paper by whiterobot … projected behind and among the musicians, to illustrate the stories with both charm and menace, creating a potent theatrical dimension.”

FLIT ALBUM REVIEWS

fRoots *****

“Flit is a work of incandescent beauty and timely relevance”

EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL REVIEWS

Edinburgh International Conference Centre, 10/11 Aug 2016

The Scotsman ****

“Film and stage set were hewn from brown packing paper with its associations of being sent around the world; the eerie twinkle and glistening whimsy of the music from a mix of distortion and effects, overlaid with the two most arresting instruments – Unthank’s haunting, breathy voice and Holmes’ rich, evocative baritone, bearing witness with grace, honesty and inescapable sadness.”

The Herald ****

“Martin Green just went round to his gran’s for a chat and now he has Flit… Taken as a whole it’s an affecting piece, giving off a feeling of helplessness but also an over-riding sense of making the best of often unsought-after situations.”
